Certified Skin Care with Dermatologists in Phoenix

Residents in Phoenix, Arizona can benefit from cosmetic, laser and surgical procedures offered by our board-certified dermatologists. From skin issues such as psoriasis, eczema, rosacea to the treatment and removal of skin cancerous tumors, our doctors offer services tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

If you live in Phoenix, it is very likely that you have sun exposure that may be harmful, especially if your skin is not protected by gear or SPF. The summer months with high heat temperatures doesn’t help either. Currently, the month of September has seen high temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. This is very dangerous heat and sun exposure to residents of Phoenix. Many patients find themselves being at risk for skin cancer or precancerous skin lesions as well as other harmful growths that evolve if in the sun for lengthy periods of time.

Skin Cancer Variations

Basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, merkel cell carcinoma and sebaceous carcinoma are types of skin cancer treated by board-certified dermatologists. Each type of carcinoma spreads and affects the body differently. For example, merkel cell carcinoma can affect nerve endings and thereby infiltrate the lymph nodes, brain, bones, and lungs. Melanoma by contrast, is the result of a pigmentation mutation called melanin. The cells can mutate causing skin cancer.

Our dermatologists and skin cancer surgeons can help alleviate your concerns. Examination and detection are very important to your timely treatment.

Remove Cysts, Warts, Skin Tags, & Angiomas

Skin and Cancer Institute offers patients surgical removal and other treatments for unwanted skin growths or conditions. For instance, lipoma which are deposits of fats in the shape of lumps can be removed by liposuction or surgically.

Cysts can be treated by laser, topical steroid, drained, or surgically removed. Eczema can be treated by light therapy.

Eczema typically appears on the hands, feet, ankles, arms and neck. It is best not to itch or scratch any patches of dry, cracked skin for risk of breaking open the lesion. Creams and ointments as well as oral corticosteroids may be prescribed by your board-certified dermatologist at Skin and Cancer Institute.

If you struggle with any of these unwanted skin conditions or concerns, schedule your appointment at our Los Angeles, Las Vegas or Phoenix offices.

Seborrheic Dermatitis in Newborns and Infants

Parents of newborn babies typically under the age of 3 months, find themselves noticing a skin condition on their newborns. Seborrheic dermatitis is very common and is the result of overproducing oil glands in the face and scalp. Conditions like cold or warm weather can also contribute. Hormones from a breastfeeding mother can also contribute to seborrheic dermatitis.

When seborrhea is found on the babies skin, it can be initially confused with baby acne. However, seborrheic dermatitis can originate in the form of tiny bumps on the face and evolve into red and yellow crusty patches. In a matter of days, the condition can worsen and become more severe and worrisome. Your dermatologist or pediatrician will most likely recommend a topical steroid hydrocortisone 1% to be used a few times daily until the rash and crust disappears. Seborrhea can be found on a newborn’s forehead between or covering the eyebrows, the cheeks and other prominent areas of the face.

This condition can also be noticed in the scalp, by its dry flakes which appear to look like dandruff, but in babies is called cradle cap. Cradle cap is identifiable by scaly yellow patches on the scalp. Shampoos for babies’ cradle cap should be used persistently until the cradle cap disappears. Shampoos including ingredients such as ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, 2% pyrithione zinc, or salicylic acid or tar-based shampoos will most likely be recommended for your little one.

If your little one shows signs of this medical skin condition, schedule your appointment today at Skin and Cancer Institute. Diagnosis and treatment are readily available.

Eczema in Young Children, Todders and Newborns

Eczema can be a disturbing skin condition for many adults and children. Eczema is a chronic skin condition that causes inflammation in the skin. Atopic dermatitis is one form of eczema. Dry scaly skin that appears raised, bumpy or has a rough texture like sandpaper can be difficult to live with.

Treatments include steroids, ointments, and creams. Eczema can be found in adults, but is also very common in newborn infants and toddlers. Eczema can cause discomfort and itchiness. It is advised not to itch these dry patches, because it can open up the lesion.

Eczema in Babies Can be Affected by Diet

Breastfed babies may find themselves more susceptible to developing eczema. Often times, lactating mothers try to eliminate certain foods and dairy from their diet to see if the eczema will go away. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggested that mothers who are nursing with infants at high risk of developing Atopic Dermatitis should avoid the following: peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, cow’s milk, and fish from their diets

Benefits of Photodynamic Treatment for your Skin’s Texture & Appearance

Photodynamic light therapy treatment is the latest advancement in dermatology for the improvement of one’s skin, fighting severe cases of acne. Acne, rosacea, acitinic keratosis and hyperplasia can also be targeted with this form of light therapy.

During the Procedure

A solution called Levulan is applied to the treatment area. The laser activates it, allowing the light to treat that area. It can be used to treat the face in its entirety, and not just portions of the face affected by acne or other skin conditions. Fight Hair Loss & See the Results with Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP therapy, is a dermatological treatment that helps skin heal faster, eliminates wrinkles, reduces dark circles under eyes, and encourages fresh hair growth in the scalp. Click here to learn more about the causes of hair loss and other potential treatments.

This treatment uses a patient’s own blood platelets to improve skin. Platelets are the cells involved in forming blood clots and scabs, and encouraging wounds to heal. Because of their role in healing damaged tissue, they exude several different growth compounds– platelet-derived growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, and transforming growth factor, among others.

When platelet-rich plasma is injected into the skin, extra fibrin begins to form near the injection sites. The growth factors exuded by platelets help boost collagen production and healing in the area, leading to a healthier appearance. The result is firmer skin, increased plumpness, filled-in wrinkles, reduced scars, and healthy scalp hair growth.

This treatment can be used by nearly anyone. It’s gaining in popularity among patients and dermatologists alike because it is long-lasting (up to eighteen months), costs about the same as other filling treatments, and offers good results with a much lower incidence of allergies or side effects. Unlike collagen treatments, PRP therapy can be safely used in patients with bovine collagen allergies. Unlike hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, which are intended for use in individual wrinkles and can leave skin with an uneven appearance, PRP injections are able to rejuvenate the entire face. Despite its overall safety, this treatment should not be used by heavy drinkers or smokers, people on anticoagulant medications, or those with cancer, liver disease, clotting disorders, or infections.

Recovery from PRP therapy is generally uneventful. Because the patient’s own cells are used, the only side effects are from the injections themselves. Patients are able to resume their daily lives immediately following the treatment, and visible results appear roughly three weeks afterward.

How Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Can Treat Acne for All Ages

While acne is typically associated with adolescence, acne can also affect adults. Acne can affect one’s confidence and self-esteem, and in severe cases it can lead to painful facial lesions and cysts.

Dermatologists have developed several ways to alleviate skin acne and other skin conditions. One affective method is acne photodynamic treatment, or PDT. This is a new procedure designed by dermatologists to combat especially resistant and stubborn cases of acne with the use of light.

With photodynamic treatment, a special agent known as Levulan is applied to the skin by a dermatologist and left there for 15 to 60 minutes. Then the dermatologist uses a light of a certain wavelength to activate the solution, causing it to be absorbed by the skin and allowing the acne cells to be targeted by the light. Sebaceous hyperplasia and acne rosacea will also be targeted by the Levulan. The photodynamic treatment will decrease skin oiliness as well as clean pores while reducing their size. Pre-existing acne scars will also reduce, as will skin wrinkles. Other conditions such as sun-damaged skin with actinic keratosis can also be treated.

PDT has significant acne treating advantages over other forms of acne therapy. PDT requires no surgery and leaves no scarring, and is much less painful than other types of treatment. Also, PDT treats the entire facial area rather than just spot treating. There is some redness and skin peeling immediately following the procedure, and patients are encouraged to avoid direct exposure to the sun for 24 hours following treatment. Over the next seven to ten days, liver spots, if present, will also darken and peel away, resulting in normal skin. For best results, having 2-3 treatments at 2 to 3 week intervals is highly encouraged.

Microdermabrasion: A Powerful Exfoliant for your Face’s Pores, Spots & Wrinkles

Microdermabrasion is a far more powerful exfoliation than anything that can be performed at home with a scrub. It is a mechanical dermabrasion, utilizing a machine in the office of a dermatologist.

Microdermabrasion is a sought-after technique, with a number of facial benefits. It will smooth rough skin and scarring, soften fine lines and wrinkles, reduce age spots (hyperpigmentation) and decrease the appearance of large pores. The use of skin-renewal products is then enhanced; and high-tech syrums can enter the deeper layers of skin and begin rebuilding collagen from the inside out. Collagen renewal is highly desirable for aging skin, as it plumps up the dermal layer, giving a smooth and youthful appearance.

The outer layer of skin is removed in microdermabrasion, which has many benefits. The outer layer of skin may become cross-hatched and wrinkled with sun exposure and aging. This can contribute to an undesirably aged appearance.

Facial scarring from acne or accidents can be of concern and can be treated with microdermabrasion. Dermatologists recognize the dramatic results that microdermabrasion can offer as a solution to these imperfections.

It usually takes only about 30 minutes for a microdermabrasion treatment, and there is no down-time for the skin to heal. For best results, a series of treatments is recommended. Usually, the esthetician will recommend the number of treatments a person will need, and can adjust accordingly for sensitive skin.

Dermatologists advise a few cautions after Microdermabrasion treatments. It is important to realize that the outer layer of skin is for protective purposes. Before it renews itself, a person must be extremely cautious about sun exposure. A gentle sun block should always be worn, even if the day looks cloudy. Also, vigorous exercise should be avoided after such a treatment, until the skin can rebuild itself.
