Benefits of Photodynamic Treatment for your Skin’s Texture & Appearance

Photodynamic light therapy treatment is the latest advancement in dermatology for the improvement of one’s skin, fighting severe cases of acne. Acne, rosacea, acitinic keratosis and hyperplasia can also be targeted with this form of light therapy.

During the Procedure

A solution called Levulan is applied to the treatment area. The laser activates it, allowing the light to treat that area. It can be used to treat the face in its entirety, and not just portions of the face affected by acne or other skin conditions. Treat and Reduce Fine Lines with a Dermal Filler Called Restylane

Restylane treatments use a dermal filler that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and creates a fuller look to the skin. In addition to correcting and eliminating wrinkles, frown lines, smile lines and crow’s feet, patients under the care of our dermatologists turn to Restylane to create a fuller appearance to the lips and add volume to their skin for a more youthful look. Since Restylane is composed of a natural sugar called hyaluronic acid, it has been FDA approved for safe use for all patients without other health conditions and will not cause an allergic reaction.

Restylane is injected directly into the skin and instantly rejuvenates the skin, while boosting hydration levels for skin that appears much younger. Mild discomfort and swelling can be expected after treatment, although this will quickly dissipate. The majority of patients at the LA Laser Center can expect their treatment session to last around 30 minutes, although this will vary depending on the area that is treated. While pain is usually not felt during treatment, patients can have the area numbed prior to the procedure.

At least one week before the procedure, patients should avoid taking vitamin E supplements, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, St. John’s Wort and aspirin. The two days following Restylane injections, it is important to not rub or massage the area. After treatment, patients should not expose the area to extreme variations in heat or cold.

Fight Hair Loss & See the Results with Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP therapy, is a dermatological treatment that helps skin heal faster, eliminates wrinkles, reduces dark circles under eyes, and encourages fresh hair growth in the scalp. Click here to learn more about the causes of hair loss and other potential treatments.

This treatment uses a patient’s own blood platelets to improve skin. Platelets are the cells involved in forming blood clots and scabs, and encouraging wounds to heal. Because of their role in healing damaged tissue, they exude several different growth compounds– platelet-derived growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, and transforming growth factor, among others.

When platelet-rich plasma is injected into the skin, extra fibrin begins to form near the injection sites. The growth factors exuded by platelets help boost collagen production and healing in the area, leading to a healthier appearance. The result is firmer skin, increased plumpness, filled-in wrinkles, reduced scars, and healthy scalp hair growth.

This treatment can be used by nearly anyone. It’s gaining in popularity among patients and dermatologists alike because it is long-lasting (up to eighteen months), costs about the same as other filling treatments, and offers good results with a much lower incidence of allergies or side effects. Unlike collagen treatments, PRP therapy can be safely used in patients with bovine collagen allergies. Unlike hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, which are intended for use in individual wrinkles and can leave skin with an uneven appearance, PRP injections are able to rejuvenate the entire face. Despite its overall safety, this treatment should not be used by heavy drinkers or smokers, people on anticoagulant medications, or those with cancer, liver disease, clotting disorders, or infections.

Recovery from PRP therapy is generally uneventful. Because the patient’s own cells are used, the only side effects are from the injections themselves. Patients are able to resume their daily lives immediately following the treatment, and visible results appear roughly three weeks afterward.

How Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Can Treat Acne for All Ages

While acne is typically associated with adolescence, acne can also affect adults. Acne can affect one’s confidence and self-esteem, and in severe cases it can lead to painful facial lesions and cysts.

Dermatologists have developed several ways to alleviate skin acne and other skin conditions. One affective method is acne photodynamic treatment, or PDT. This is a new procedure designed by dermatologists to combat especially resistant and stubborn cases of acne with the use of light.

With photodynamic treatment, a special agent known as Levulan is applied to the skin by a dermatologist and left there for 15 to 60 minutes. Then the dermatologist uses a light of a certain wavelength to activate the solution, causing it to be absorbed by the skin and allowing the acne cells to be targeted by the light. Sebaceous hyperplasia and acne rosacea will also be targeted by the Levulan. The photodynamic treatment will decrease skin oiliness as well as clean pores while reducing their size. Pre-existing acne scars will also reduce, as will skin wrinkles. Other conditions such as sun-damaged skin with actinic keratosis can also be treated.

PDT has significant acne treating advantages over other forms of acne therapy. PDT requires no surgery and leaves no scarring, and is much less painful than other types of treatment. Also, PDT treats the entire facial area rather than just spot treating. There is some redness and skin peeling immediately following the procedure, and patients are encouraged to avoid direct exposure to the sun for 24 hours following treatment. Over the next seven to ten days, liver spots, if present, will also darken and peel away, resulting in normal skin. For best results, having 2-3 treatments at 2 to 3 week intervals is highly encouraged.

Microdermabrasion: A Powerful Exfoliant for your Face’s Pores, Spots & Wrinkles

Microdermabrasion is a far more powerful exfoliation than anything that can be performed at home with a scrub. It is a mechanical dermabrasion, utilizing a machine in the office of a dermatologist.

Microdermabrasion is a sought-after technique, with a number of facial benefits. It will smooth rough skin and scarring, soften fine lines and wrinkles, reduce age spots (hyperpigmentation) and decrease the appearance of large pores. The use of skin-renewal products is then enhanced; and high-tech syrums can enter the deeper layers of skin and begin rebuilding collagen from the inside out. Collagen renewal is highly desirable for aging skin, as it plumps up the dermal layer, giving a smooth and youthful appearance.

The outer layer of skin is removed in microdermabrasion, which has many benefits. The outer layer of skin may become cross-hatched and wrinkled with sun exposure and aging. This can contribute to an undesirably aged appearance.

Facial scarring from acne or accidents can be of concern and can be treated with microdermabrasion. Dermatologists recognize the dramatic results that microdermabrasion can offer as a solution to these imperfections.

It usually takes only about 30 minutes for a microdermabrasion treatment, and there is no down-time for the skin to heal. For best results, a series of treatments is recommended. Usually, the esthetician will recommend the number of treatments a person will need, and can adjust accordingly for sensitive skin.

Dermatologists advise a few cautions after Microdermabrasion treatments. It is important to realize that the outer layer of skin is for protective purposes. Before it renews itself, a person must be extremely cautious about sun exposure. A gentle sun block should always be worn, even if the day looks cloudy. Also, vigorous exercise should be avoided after such a treatment, until the skin can rebuild itself.

VelaSmooth Reduces Cellulite with Light and Radio Frequency

Cellulite is a problem that plagues most women, eighty percent have some form of these rippling fat deposits. Velasmooth is a treatment that helps reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Cellulite is fat that is deposited directly below the dermis. The fat cells grow but the connective tissue between the fat cells does not, which creates the dimpled, ‘orange-peel’ effect that is cellulite’s calling card. The location of this fat and the appearance are what separate cellulite from normal adipose. Women from ranging from model slim to overweight can have cellulite on their thighs, hips, and buttocks, the areas typically affected by cellulite. Click here to learn more about all of the potential areas VelaSmooth is commonly used to treat.

Velasmooth uses light and radio frequency to heat fat cells. This helps release fat to the lymph nodes. The body will dispose of the fat naturally. Velasmooth also gently smooths the skin using suction. This allows the light and radio frequency to be distributed uniformly. This results in the combination of fat reduction and smoothing results in a tighter, smoother appearance. Our board-certified dermatologists will advise our patients on the optimal number of visits for best results.

During the Procedure

The client lies on the treatment table. The dermatologist passes Velasmooth hand piece over the affected area several times. There will be a feeling of massage from the suction as well as a possible feeling of warmth from the radio frequency. Patients typically experience some discomfort as this is a medical treatment and working on a deeper level than typical spa treatments.

LA Laser Center offers Velasmooth treatments at all of our offices including in California, Arizona and Nevada. For further information on this cellulite treatment contact our offices for a consultation.
